There May Be A Problem With Your Winhttp.dll File

I have an installation package that contains WINHTTP.DLL as a redistributable, and was picked up by running dependancies. I imagine the reason behind this is because the program accesses a web service using SOAP3 and MSXML4. On some systems during installation I will get a message that is something like 'WINHTTP.DLL is a protected windows file & cannot be updated.

Jan 08, 2010 Your specific problem may have had a completely different cause. There hasn't been any logs posted so far.

You may need to update your windows system.' It has happend on a WIN2K SP3 and WIN XP Pro system, but did not occur on a WIN98SE, WIN2K SP4, or WIN2000 Server machine.

We just acknowledge the message and it installs just fine, & seems to run ok. 7-zip. Is there a way I can suppress this message? Thanks for the reply. Actually now that I look at my redistributeables WinHTTP is not checked. I pretty sure it's coming from the soapcore.msm which is being merged in.

There

It's version 3.00.1325.3 and contains the following files: MSSOAP30.DLL MSSOAPR3.DLL WHSC30.DLL WISC30.DLL That version is the STK3Redist.exe version that can be downloaded from MS. I believe that the WHSC30.DLL contains WINHTTP. There's no doubt that I need SOAP3, and the reason I think I get the message on some machines and not others is probably based on whether they already have SOAP 3 installed.

Any more advice would be appreciated. After looking more closely I found that WINHTTP.DLL was put in my File list somehow. I will remove it. There's also MSOXMLMF.DLL which I did not add that I will remove after I find out what it is. It's probably MSMXL4. Last edited by KTB1024; at 11:16 AM.
