I second Med's thought on the Vantec cooler.

Let me reinforce that, TRASH THE STOCK FAN, GET SOMETHING ELSE! I got a Vantec Iceberq 6 because I liked that it's designed to also cool the case. It actually exhausts the fan outside the back of the case through the pci slot. Ebay is a great place. You can find guys who have taken PC 9800 Pro's and flashed/hacked them to work perfectly in a Mac.

Like Medinaray said, $70 - $90 is a lot better on a 10 year old computer than $230 which is what the Mac version costs new. I picked up a Radeon 9800 128mb off of Craig's List a couple years ago for $45 and flashed it myself. It's been working solidly, and I leave my G4 on 24/7. (knock on wood) I attribute nothing overheating in my case to the Vantec.

(It could be something else, but let's give the cooler credit, haha) Acard pci-ide adapter w/ 2 x 160GB WD in a OS X soft raid D-link (NEC chipset) 5 port USB 2 card 1.5 ghz Mercury Extreme 2GB RAM Pioneer DVR-109 500GB usb 2 for movies 300GB firewire for Time Machine 1TB usb2 cause it was cheap And yes, it's incredible that these bad boy machines still run a whole shitload better than everyone's 'new' Dell that they bought and 'why the. would I want to buy a Mac.' Well because your computer is going to die in two years, and my 10 year old computer is still more solid, faster and easier to use than your brand new computer.

Power Macintosh G4 (agp Graphics)

It operated for 15 minutes then cut out. Every time I re-started it cut out after a short while. The 9800 carries two fans to cool a very hot processor.

It requires an auxiliary power plug which you will have in your G4. The Radeon site states a minimum power requirement is 300 watts. My G4 has a power unit of 330 watts but still could not sustain the power demands placed upon it. Clearly different users have different results according to the power demands of the Mac hardware configuration. No doubt my Sonnet added extra power demands, however the G4 Gig Ethernet still cut out with the old 450 dual processor in situ.

I found a flashed Nvidia GF6200 to solve my problems. It ran cooler, needs no extra fans, supports Core Image and Quartz Extreme. Needs minimum OS Tiger 10.4.3. Less noise, less demands for power. Better graphics rendering than the Radeon 9200. I bought mine from Ricki Wai in Hong Kong: local228@gmail.com who was happy to guarantee the flashed cards and changed my Radeon 9800 for the GF6200 without any fuss. Dec 22, 2008 5:22 AM.

Thanks for the info. I think I might be in good shape. A little trouble on initial configuration. I may have installed the incorrect drivers for the card and caused a kernal panic when switching to an unsupported resolution.

I had to then remove then from the system prefs after starting in safe mode. Fixed permissions and it's been running ok since. Can anyone clarify the best way to connect to my Samsung HD LCD and the best resolution I should be able to attain? Am I getting a HD signal from DVI. I'm not very familiar with all of this. Also, is there an app to get the temperature of the graphics card so I can keep tabs on it.

Dec 22, 2008 5:58 AM. The 9800 carries two fans to cool a very hot processor. Only one fan on the 9800. The Sonnet has two, right? That's the power hog. The Radeon site states a minimum power requirement is 300 watts.

Recommended, especially if you have a heavily upgraded system, as you do. Until the 9800 Pro was temporarily discontinued, then re-released, the 9800 Pro was always listed as an upgrade for a G4 Sawtooth, and on.

It's the other things that we put in the machines that push the system over the limit. My G4 has a power unit of 330 watts but still could not sustain the power demands placed upon it. I wouldn't blame it all on the 9800. I have a dual 450mhz machine with two hard drives, a USB 2.0 PCI card, and a 9800 Pro with a Zalman VF900-Cu cooler. Never a single problem, gaming or burning DVD/CD while listening to iTunes. No doubt my Sonnet added extra power demands, however the G4 Gig Ethernet still cut out with the old 450 dual processor in situ.

I believe there is more to the problem than a graphics card. I have a Sawtooth (237w PSU) that ran a 2.0ghz 7447A processor upgrade and a 9800 Pro very well for a couple years. Added too many hard drives (2 SATA and two ATA) and other accessories (USB 2.0 PCI, SATA controller, 2 hard drive fans and LED lighting) which caused heat degradation of power output, with resulting freezes during burning of DVD.

Other than the burning issue, game play and system performance never faltered. Since burning DVD/CD is something I like to do, changed to a new PSU, and all is fine. Until I overloaded the system, the CPU upgrade, 9800 Pro, and one hard drive all ran with no problems due to lack of power.

A fine little card, with 1/2 the Core Image power, and 30-50% less performance in games. Have to watch out for the 6200 in Leopard as well. I know of those who have had to ditch the 6200 for another card (typically a Radeon) so that they could run Leopard. Local is an excellent seller! Dec 22, 2008 6:18 AM.
